Introduction part II - Lima

Posted by Marco Antonio Mendoza Sunday, March 8, 2009

Lima the largest city in Peru, a city of approximately 10 million a number which is a little under half of Peru's total population! A capital city which was formed shortly after the spaniards had conquered the incas. A city that to this day continues to grow as its city limits continue to strech.

It was through Lima that I was introduced to Peru as a child and it is the city that I continue to return to. The city of Lima is made up of following districts:

Callao
Surco
Chorrillos
Lima
Comas
Los Olivos
Barranco
Miraflores
Surquillo
San IsidroSan Borja
Puente Piedra
Rimac
Independencia
San Juan de Lurigancho
Santa Anita
La Molina
San Luis
San Martin de Porres
Bellavista
La Punta
La Perla
San Miguel
Magdalena del Mar
Jesus Maria
Lince
Cercado
San Juan de Miraflores
Ate
Villa El Salvador
Villa Maria del Triunfo
El Agustino
Breña
La Victoria
Pueblo Libre

This city is huge, a person can get lost wandering through the many streets and alleyways. For travelers and tourists Lima is their first stop in Peru and most just pass on through without really exploring the city. This is where they are missing out because there is a lot to see and do in Lima than just the museums. Aside from the two zoo's, Lima also has several historical landmarks that date back hundreds of years.
If one travels to central downtown Lima they will find the original structures from the cities initial days still standing tall. From the presidental palace to the Plaza Dos de Mayo. Just walking through these streets I can see the past and I feel like I'm there(after I block out all the honking cars and massive amounts of people).

If you are a fan of bizzare foods then Lima has more than enough wild dishes to satisfy those adventurous urges. You could try your hand at Cuy (AKA. Guinea Pig) or maybe you prefer a nice plate of Tallarin con Pichon (Spagettii w/Pigeon). For those who aren't so adventurous, Lima offers a wide selection of gastronomic options.

Lima's nightlife is by far one of the best that I have experienced. In fact, at night the city seems to come alive and everyone gets dressed for a night of drinking and dancing at some of the cities most popular nightclubs. Be prepared to party like its 1999 because the music doesn't stop in the city that never sleeps until 6 AM! Thats right the night just drags on so make sure to eat hardy before you head out to drink yourself stupid, drinks are cheap so don't be shy to splurge a little. I recommend the Boulevard de Barranco for the best nightclub experience. The place is packed with clubs, bars, and restaurants to get the job done right.

Transportation in Lima is an article all in itself but that is for another day. Let me just say that your options are to take a taxi, ride the thousands of privately owned buses and tiny combi's, rent a car, or to take the soon to be operational electric train that goes from Chorrillos to Comas. Which ever decision you decide to make just remember to hang on to your belongings tight and away from the windows so that you don't become another gringo victim of theft.

Warning! if you find yourself the victim of a theft never pursue the theif many carry knifes or guns and usually travel in groups. You will be putting your life in danger as many theives are known to kill a person for as little as $20 and a pair of shoes. It's not worth it, so just pay attention to your surroundings and you should be fine.

There is so much more to talk about Lima and I will continue to write about it later but please enjoy the photos and feel free to give me some feedback as to how to better improve this site. Thank you.
